Induction
We know how nerve racking it can be settling into a new environment, even if you're usually relaxed and confident about meeting people. That's why we make sure that your induction period lets you get a complete picture of how the business works, your role, how you contribute to CN, and most importantly where to look for help.
Performance
We think it is important to get away regularly from the usual day-to day-stuff, step back, and spend time on you, looking at what you need to achieve and the areas you can improve to be even better at what you do.
That's where performance appraisals come in. Twice a year we set time aside so that you can chat to your manager about where the business is going and the part you'll play in continuing our success and what we can do to help you, working with your manager to agree a development plan.
Your development plan could be pretty varied, perhaps you'd like to check out some of our formal workshops (throughout the year we have a great suite of workshops running which cover all areas of the business from really specific skill-based training, loads of management development and even some personal development stuff) or you might want to visit some of our other sites to learn from their good practice, you might want to learn at your desk with some internet-based training or you might find yourself on a project team. Whatever suits you to develop your talent - we're flexible!

Of course we all know that the best learning takes place every day, so in a business that is evolving like CN, the opportunities to develop are second to none. We've come a long way from just producing great newspapers and we've got an interesting journey ahead of us.
